‘Pattern Recognition’

‘Pattern Recognition’ explores how complexity can arise from a simple pattern as it inhabits an architectural space. From a distance, the design presents as a purely abstract, colourful and graphic pattern. As one approaches clues of reality and an architectural form emerge, the image renders a room.

The 'pattern' is an array of cubes – an architectural screen located towards the back of the virtual space. Each cube is identical in orientation and colour, with 3 black faces and 3 coloured ones located in front of a black backdrop. The shifting perspective of individual cubes across the array reveals different coloured faces from one side to the other, from top to bottom. The overall pattern is unique to the virtual viewer's position within the 3-dimensional space. Reflections off the wall and floor surfaces create 4 different viewpoints of the array. An intriguing tension of colour exists between the pattern seen directly by the viewer and the reflected surfaces. The pattern continues its journey as it permeates through space, reflecting off glossy wall tiles and a polished concrete floor.

‘Pattern Recognition’ has been designed for SITE 3: Top Floor Gallery. It is envisioned as 2.7m (h) x 4.8 (w) and installed hanging down, so the base touches the gallery floor. In this way, the virtual room in the tapestry acts as an extension of the gallery floor itself, inviting the viewer to step into the image.
